Antoni Gaudí, a Catalan architect known as an “eccentric genius.” He was deeply fascinated by the laws of nature and was a man who thoroughly observed and experimented with the world around him. In particular, the anecdote that he went so far as to obtain plaster death masks of actual corpses to study human anatomy and proportions in order to render the human figures carved on the “Nativity Facade” of the Sagrada Família with almost brutal realism clearly demonstrates his relentless artistic dedication.

For the last 12 years of his life, Gaudí completely ceased all outside activities, eating and sleeping in the cathedral’s workshop while devoting all his energy solely to the cathedral’s design and construction. He frequently skipped meals and dressed so shabbily that, when he was struck by a tram in 1926, passersby mistook him for a homeless person, resulting in a delay in his treatment—a well-known anecdote.

This is the most widely known quote among the countless sayings left by Antoni Gaudí. From its earliest stages, the Sagrada Família faced frequent financial difficulties, and the pace of construction was inevitably slow due to Gaudí’s perfectionist approach. Whenever those around him urged him to speed up construction, Gaudí responded calmly, “My client, God, is in no hurry.” As if to prove his unwavering philosophy, the cathedral—after passing through the hands of countless people over the course of approximately 144 years—has finally reached this historic moment.

However, since his studio was destroyed by fire during the Spanish Civil War in 1936—resulting in the loss of countless original drawings, sketches, and notes—the records he has left us today are all the more precious and special.
