Recently, a friend of mine from New York came to visit me in Seoul, and naturally, there was a sneaky competition between us: “Which is the more attractive city?” So I wanted to show him that Seoul is better.
I chose to take him to a selection of bars where he could experience the best of Seoul’s nightlife. I took him to places with great food, unique concepts, and atmosphere, and the response was beyond my expectations. “You can’t get this kind of experience in New York,” he said, spontaneously.
We didn’t want to keep this fun experience to ourselves, so we decided to share it with our readers.
This is a list of bars for those who want to experience Seoul in the most Seoul way possible, and to the fullest.
Here’s a taste of what Seoul nightlife has to offer.
1. Cricket Seoul
Cricket Seoul is one of the best bars to take your foreign friends to. They use traditional Korean ingredients and flavors in their original cocktails, making it easy for first-timers to enjoy.
The space is decorated as if you’re looking into the cupboards of a rural grandmother’s house, giving it a natural and welcoming vibe. The cocktails are made with familiar ingredients like plum, barley, and green tea, as well as fresh “tap cocktails” that come straight from the tap like draft beer.
The food is also a fusion of traditional Korean favorites, making it the perfect place for a quick bite to eat or a full dinner.

2. Zest
A bar that exploded onto the scene after going viral on TikTok, Zest is currently one of the hottest spots in Seoul’s bar scene. It’s so popular that even when we visited at 11pm on a Tuesday night on a weekday, there were 18 waiting teams outside.
Zest has also been recognized internationally, being named the 2nd Best Bar in Asia 2025 and 16th Best Bar in the World. If you want to visit, reservations are recommended before 8pm, after 8pm you’ll have to walk in and get your name on the waiting list.
Zest’s commitment to sustainable fine drinking with a ‘zero waste’ motif is a big part of its appeal. The cocktails are made with local ingredients and are both creative and well executed, making it more than just a trend, but a philosophy.

3. Elements
Just recently opened , Elements, like its name, strips away the unnecessary elements and goes back to the essential simplicity. The interior has an overall clean and minimalist design, and the drinks are intuitively named and organized to match the concept.
My personal favorite is the Peanut Butter and Jelly. In a single sip, you can taste the savory peanut butter and the sweetness of the jam, a much more delicate balance than you might expect. The fact that the drink is served in a plastic bag like an American student would pack a sandwich, with a heartwarming message written on top, also adds to the Elements’ wit.
They also serve a dinner menu, including pasta, so it’s perfect for a quick drink or a full dinner visit.

4. Pine and Co.
This is one of our favorite bars in Seoul, but it’s also one of the hardest to find – there’s not even a sign outside, making it even more challenging for first-timers. A narrow passageway down the side of the building leads to a locked door, which is only opened by pressing an inconspicuous doorbell next to a plaque.
Beyond that door is a space that could easily be called one of Seoul’s “hidden gems. One of the must-order items on the menu is the ‘nuruk’ drink. A pot is filled with barley and set on fire to maximize the savory aroma, and then a signature cocktail is placed at the center of it all.
From the moment you lift the glass to the last sip, the aroma of the charred grains and the flavor of the cocktail are layered together to create a unique drinking experience that is both tasty and aromatic.

5. Bar Cham
If you want to feel the season in a glass, Bar Cham is the place to go. With a completely different cocktail for every season, it’s the most delicate and sophisticated expression of Korean seasonal flavors.
The cocktails, based on traditional liquors, change in flavor, temperature, and even texture depending on the season, and a single drink is enough to make you feel the season of the moment. This approach has been highly acclaimed overseas as well, making it one of Seoul’s most iconic bars, ranking 16th in the Asia’s Best Bars Top 50 and 53rd in the World’s Best Bars.

6. Cobbler
Located in Seochon, Cobbler is a converted hanok bar. The cozy space, like a small house, naturally makes you feel comfortable on your first visit. There’s not even a typical menu here.
Instead, you simply tell the bartender what vibe, flavor, or aroma you’re looking for, and they’ll create your cocktail on the fly. Each drink is a different experience, made to your liking, and will leave you feeling like you’ve captured the mood of the day.

7. Gong Gan
Gong Gan is a space that’s garnering attention, ranking 63rd on the list of Asia’s 50 Best Bars. Located in the quaint Bukchon Hanok Village, it’s a sensual bar that complements the unique atmosphere of the neighborhood.
When I visited on a cold December night, I was impressed by the warm lighting through the frosted windows. It contrasted with the cold air outside and maximized the coziness of the space.
The bar is also housed in a converted hanok, and the menu is inspired by Korean literature, film, and traditional culture. Each cocktail tells a story, and it feels like you’re slowly savoring a narrative.
My favorite cocktail was the Mora. It’s an odi-based cocktail inspired by the history of Korean immigration to Mexico in the early 1900s. The moment I tilted the glass, Kim Young-ha’s novel ‘Black Flower’ came to mind, and the experience was one of bringing together memory and literature in a single drink.
